There is something happening in our industry right now that I think needs to be talked about honestly. A lot of newer professionals feel overwhelmed. They see packed classrooms, crowded social media feeds, job postings with dozens of applicants, and a market that feels uncertain. They look at those of us who have been in this profession for years and think, you don’t understand what it’s like now. And in some ways, they’re right.

This is a different time. A different economy. A different world than when many of us started. But there is one truth about the beauty profession that has remained steady through every shift, every recession, every trend cycle, every setback: This profession survives.

Beauty survives because people will always crave connection. They will always want to feel seen, cared for, confident, restored, and human. When the world shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, people delayed cars, homes, vacations, and luxury purchases. But the moment they could, they came back for self-care. They came back for touch, conversation, confidence, normalcy, and healing. That should tell you everything.

This industry is not built only on vanity. It is built on human need.

The Dangerous Energy of Blame

​This week I watched something online that made my stomach turn. Someone asked in a local beauty group what it was like to work at certain salons. Some people shared negative experiences. Some shared positive ones. That part is expected. What bothered me was watching the original poster engage with the negativity.

“Oh, I heard that too.”
“That’s what I thought.”
“Yes, I knew it.”

​And there it was. Not curiosity. Not discernment. Not confidence. Validation for fear. This is where many careers get stuck before they begin.

People let strangers on the internet decide where they apply, who they respect, what opportunities they pursue, and how they feel about businesses they have never personally experienced. That is a dangerous way to build a future.

Oh, I heard that too.
