How long do typical Acne treatments take to work?

11/21/2023

Acne Treatment
The time it takes for acne treatments to work can vary widely depending on the type of treatment and the severity of the acne. Here is a general list:
  1. Topical Retinoids (like tretinoin, adapalene): Users might start to see results in 4 to 6 weeks, with full benefits taking up to 12 weeks or longer.
  2. Salicylic Acid: Initial improvement can often be seen in as little as 1 to 2 weeks, with more noticeable results after 4 to 6 weeks.
  3. Benzoyl Peroxide: Some results may be visible in 5 to 14 days, but it typically takes about 4 weeks to see a significant difference.
  4. Antibiotics (topical and oral): Improvements can be noticed at 6 to 8 weeks, but it might take several months for maximum effect.
  5. Hormonal Treatments (like birth control pills): These can take several months, often 3 to 6 months, to see substantial improvement.
  6. Azelaic Acid: Improvement can be seen starting at 4 weeks, with more significant results after 8 to 12 weeks.
  7. Chemical Peels: Some people might see improvements immediately after recovery from the peel, but for acne and its scars, it can take several sessions to see substantial results.
  8. Laser and Light Therapies: Results can vary; some may see improvements quickly, but typically several sessions are needed over a period of weeks or months.
  9. Isotretinoin (Accutane): This is a longer treatment course usually ranging from 4 to 6 months, with results often starting to become evident after the first month.
  10. Tea Tree Oil and Other Natural Remedies: These can be highly variable, and while some people report quick results, it can typically take several weeks to notice a difference.

It's important to note that all acne treatments work best when used consistently and as directed. Sometimes, acne may appear to get worse before it gets better. Understanding all the options is important to make sure your client receives the best advice.
